Token unlocks and what they do to price

A token unlock is a scheduled release of coins that were locked at launch. The schedule is public, yet unlocks still move prices — because what matters is not the event, it is the size of the release relative to daily volume.

What an unlock actually is

Most projects launch with only a fraction of total supply circulating. The rest sits under a vesting contract reserved for the team, early investors and the ecosystem fund. It is released on a published schedule, usually monthly after an initial cliff of six to twelve months.

Because the dates are public, the common assumption is that unlocks are already priced in. In practice they often are not, and the reason is mechanical rather than informational.

The number that matters

Compare the unlock size to average daily trading volume, not to market capitalisation. Market cap is a paper number; daily volume is the actual depth available to absorb selling.

An unlock worth 5% of market cap sounds small. If daily volume is 1% of market cap, that same unlock equals five full days of trading — and the order book has no chance of absorbing it without moving price.

Unlock as % of market capDaily volume as % of market capDays of volume to absorb
1%5%0.2 — negligible
3%2%1.5 — noticeable
5%1%5 — heavy pressure

Who receives the tokens

A release to the ecosystem fund behaves differently from a release to early investors who bought at a fraction of market price. The first is typically deployed slowly into grants and liquidity; the second has a holder sitting on a large unrealised gain and an obvious incentive.

Vesting documentation usually names the recipient category for each tranche. That detail predicts behaviour better than the headline number does.

FAQ

Are unlocks always bearish?

No. When the release is small relative to daily volume, or goes to a long-term fund rather than early investors, price impact is often negligible.

Where can I find unlock schedules?

Vesting terms are normally published in the project's tokenomics documentation, and several trackers aggregate upcoming releases across projects.
