Ethereum is steadily progressing toward the launch of its next major network update, Pectra, on the mainnet. This upgrade, anticipated in the second quarter of the year, has recently passed an important testing phase on a newly established test network known as Hoodi.
New Testing Environment for Robust Validation
Launched on March 17, the testnet Hoodi was specifically developed to overcome technical challenges observed in previous test environments such as Sepolia. Earlier networks faced issues like configuration errors and synchronization problems, which compromised their stability. In contrast, Hoodi offers a more controlled and efficient setting that has allowed developers to assess the update with greater precision.
Key Enhancements Introduced by Pectra
Pectra brings several significant improvements for users and network operators alike. One of its primary features is the enhancement of wallet functionality through improved account abstraction, as introduced by EIP-7702. Additionally, changes to the validation system will enable network participants to increase their staking capacity from 32 ETH up to 2,048 ETH, courtesy of EIP-7251. Furthermore, the update implements scalability advancements for rollups via EIP-7691, which optimizes transaction processing by increasing the maximum number of data blobs handled in each operation.
Pathway to Mainnet Deployment
The recent trial on Hoodi demonstrated that the update could complete its processes within a relatively short timeframe, reinforcing confidence among the Ethereum development team. If no significant complications emerge from further evaluations, developers expect that Pectra will be activated on the main network roughly 30 days after the successful testing cycle, positioning the potential rollout for late April. However, additional time may be required to ensure a seamless transition, which could postpone the implementation into May or even June.
